Shipley Carnegie Library

These images are part of ongoing experiments with processing using a neglected Carnegie Library in Shipley, West Yorkshire as the focus.

This isolated and forlorn building lies on a narrow neck of land on the edge of Shipley town, wedged in by busy roads on three sides and seems to be at high risk of destruction. Perhaps it's not a very beautiful building, some might say it would not be missed if it were lost. However, as I have worked with the images and continue to experiment, I have come in some way to own it and have grown to respect it if not actually love it. I hope that some day a use will be found for it.

I began with stitching together a series of images of the building to form a continuous facade. Experimenting with possibilities of processing and manipulation, the resulting images with varied backgrounds and the addition of other architectural elements, the tower of St Paul's Church and the tower of Shipley Market (another unloved landmark) I've played with mood and atmosphere; blurring the line between reality and the fantastic. A neglected place takes on a new perhaps even heroic aspect!
